The Brewers have signed 33-year old righty reliever/starter Claudio Vargas to a minor league deal. Vargas last pitched in the majors back in 2010 with the Brewers. He has pitched in 74 games (23 starts) in his first three years with the Brewers and he is 13-6 with 1 save, a 4.78 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Vargas has pitched in 217 games (114 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 48-40 with 1 save, a 4.83 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Vargas could help the Brewers out of the bullpen at some point in 2012, if he looks good in the minors.

Jim Henderson is looking good in AAA-ball for the Milwaukee Brewers

29-year old righty reliever Jim Henderson has been outstanding in AAA-ball so far this year for the Brewers. He has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Brewers so far this year and he is 2-1 with 1 save, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. Henderson has only given up 8 hits while whiffing 17 batters in his first 16 2/3 innings this year as he has been impressive. Henderson has pitched in 287 games (40 starts) in his first 10 years in the minors and he is 38-33 with 47 saves, a 4.03 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He could get his first shot at the show if he keeps pitching well.

29-year old righty swinging 2B Rickie Weeks is off to a terrible start this year for the Brewers. He has played in 30 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 19 for 113 (.168 avg, .613 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 3 homers, 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Weeks has walked 21 times this year (which is good), but he has also whiffed 37 times (and that is pathetic). Weeks needs to start getting into gear at the plate, as the Brewers are depending on him….big time.

The Brewers have signed 29-year old righty swinging infielder Tommy Manzella to a minor league deal. Manzella played in 15 games in AAA-ball for the Diamondbacks earlier this year and he was 4 for 40 (.100 avg, .268 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. He only walked 2 times while whiffing 21 times in AAA-ball so far this year, which is pathetic. Manzella last played in the majors back in 2010 with the Houston Astros. He has played in 90 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 59 for 263 (.224 avg, .528 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 1 homer and 21 RBIs. This signing proves just how desperate the Brewers are for shortstops.

The Milwaukee Brewers call up infield reinforcements

The Brewers have called up 25-year old lefty swinging 1B/3B Taylor Green and 30-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Edwin Maysonet from AAA-ball to help out in the infield. Green came into this season as the Brewers’ #8 prospect according to Baseball America and he could get a shot to start at 1B for the Brewers. He played in 27 games in AAA-ball this year for the Brewers and he was 29 for 101 (.287 avg, .759 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 homer and 7 RBIs. Green played in 20 games for the Brewers last year (his first taste of the majors) and he was 10 for 37 (.270 avg, .622 OPS) with 2 runs scored, o homers and 1 RBI. Edwin Maysonet played in 25 games in AAA-ball for the Brewers this year and he was 18 for 84 (.214 avg, .595 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He last played in the majors back in 2009 with the Astros. Maysonet has played in 46 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 21 for 76 (.276 avg, .659 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer and 7 RBIs. The Brewers really hope that Green & Maysonet can give them a boost in their time of need.

The Milwaukee Brewers place outfielder Carlos Gomez on the D.L.

The Brewers have placed 26-year old righty swinging CF Carlos Gomez on the 15-day disabled list due to a left hamstring strain. Gomez has played in 21 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 14 for 50 (.280 avg, .801 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. 31-year old lefty swinging Nyjer Morgan will take over in CF full time until Gomez is ready to return to action. Morgan has played in 23 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 11 for 61 (.180 avg, .399 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. The Brewers hope that Morgan gets his act together at the plate soon.

The Brewers have placed 35-year old righty swinging SS Alex Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list due to a right knee injury. Gonzalez has played in 24 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 21 for 81 (.259 avg, .783 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 4 homers, 15 RBIs and 1 stolen base. 32-year old switch-hitting Cesar Izturis is going to take over for Gonzalez at SS while he’s out of action. Izturis has played in 13 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 4 for 21 (.190 avg, .418 OPS) with 0 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI. He will likely play solid D, but the Brewers are going to miss Gonzalez’ bat.

UPDATE: (5/7/2012) - An MRI has revealed that Alex Gonzalez has a torn ACL and he will likely miss the rest of the 2012 season. This is another huge blow for the Brewers.

Scooter Gennett is off to a good start in the minors for the Milwaukee Brewers

22-year old lefty swinging 2B Scooter Gennett came into this season as the Brewers’ #2 prospect according to Baseball America. Gennett has played in 29 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 34 for 123 (.276 avg, .695 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers, 14 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He has played in 281 games in his first three years in the minors and he is 350 of 1,161 (.301 avg, .768 OPS) with 175 runs scored, 21 homers, 120 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. Gennett is blocked right now by Rickie Weeks at the major league level at 2B, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has a high upside.

Shaun Marcum has been a rock in the Milwaukee Brewers’ rotation

30-year old righty starting pitcher Shaun Marcum continues to be a rock in the Brewers’ starting rotation. He has pitched in 5 games (all starts) for the Brewers in 2012 and he is 1-1 with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Marcum has now pitched in 38 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Brewers and he is 14-8 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. The Brewers traded 3B Brett Lawrie to the Blue Jays for Marcum, so he needs to keep up the good work. Lawrie is really playing well for the Jays this year.

He pitched in 71 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Brewers and he was 1-3 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Some team will give Braddock another shot as he has an electric arm.
