The Brewers have placed 37-year old righty reliever LaTroy Hawkins on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness. Hawkins has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) for the Brewers so far this year and he is 0-3 with a 8.44 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. The Brewers have recalled 25-year old righty reliever/starter Mike McClendon to replace Hawkins in the pen. McClendon has pitched in 32 games (3 starts) in AA+AAA-ball this year and he is 5-4 with 2 saves, a 2.06 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He has now pitched in 164 games (39 starts) in his five years in the minors and he is 29-23 with 16 saves, a 3.50 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.

UPDATE: (8/28/2010) - Hawkins has undergone season ending shoulder surgery.

The Brewers have placed 24-year old CF Carlos Gomez on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion. Gomez has played in 75 games for the Brewers this year and he is 56 of 246 (.228 avg, .635 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 5 homers, 22 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Brewers have recalled 24-year old righty swinigng Lorenzo Cain to replace Gomez on the roster. Cain played in 3 games earlier this season for the Brewers and he was 3 of 5 (.600 avg, 1.400 OPS) with 1 run scored. Look for Cain to get a lot of P.T. this time around for the Brewers as Jim Edmonds is also gimpy right now.

The Brewers have placed 34-year old lefty starting pitcher Doug Davis back on the 15-day disabled list. This time it’s elbow tendinitis that’s doing him in. He has started 8 games for the Brewers this season and he is 1-4 with a 7.51 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP. The Brewers have called up 23-year old righty swinging outfielder Lorenzo Cain to replace Davis on the active roster. Cain has played in 72 games in AA+AAA-ball this season and he is 93 of 285 (.326 avg, .846 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 3 homers, 22 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. He has now played in 572 games in his six years in the minors and he is 646 of 2,213 (.292 avg, .782 OPS) with 347 runs scored, 31 homers, 243 RBIs and 123 stolen bases. Cain came into this season as the Brewers’ #8 rated prospect according to Baseball America.

The Brewers have placed 24-year old righty starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain. He has started 18 games for the Brewers this season and he is 8-4 with a 2.58 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. This injury will cause Gallardo to miss his first All-Star Game next week. The Brewers have activated lefty starting pitcher Doug Davis from the D.L. to replace Gallardo in the rotation. Davis pitched in 3 games (all starts) on a rehab assignment in A+AAA-ball and he was 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He pitched in 7 games (all starts) for the Brewers earlier this season and he was 1-4 with a 7.56 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP. The Brewers hope Davis will be better this time around.

The Brewers have placed 29-year old righty reliever Todd Coffey on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right thumb. Coffey has pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Brewers this year and he is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The Brewers will miss Coffey who was one of their most dependable relievers this season.
