The Milwaukee Brewers place outfielder Carlos Gomez on the D.L.

The Brewers have placed 26-year old righty swinging CF Carlos Gomez on the 15-day disabled list due to a left hamstring strain. Gomez has played in 21 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 14 for 50 (.280 avg, .801 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. 31-year old lefty swinging Nyjer Morgan will take over in CF full time until Gomez is ready to return to action. Morgan has played in 23 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 11 for 61 (.180 avg, .399 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. The Brewers hope that Morgan gets his act together at the plate soon.

The Brewers have placed 35-year old righty swinging SS Alex Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list due to a right knee injury. Gonzalez has played in 24 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 21 for 81 (.259 avg, .783 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 4 homers, 15 RBIs and 1 stolen base. 32-year old switch-hitting Cesar Izturis is going to take over for Gonzalez at SS while he’s out of action. Izturis has played in 13 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 4 for 21 (.190 avg, .418 OPS) with 0 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI. He will likely play solid D, but the Brewers are going to miss Gonzalez’ bat.

UPDATE: (5/7/2012) - An MRI has revealed that Alex Gonzalez has a torn ACL and he will likely miss the rest of the 2012 season. This is another huge blow for the Brewers.

Scooter Gennett is off to a good start in the minors for the Milwaukee Brewers

22-year old lefty swinging 2B Scooter Gennett came into this season as the Brewers’ #2 prospect according to Baseball America. Gennett has played in 29 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 34 for 123 (.276 avg, .695 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers, 14 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He has played in 281 games in his first three years in the minors and he is 350 of 1,161 (.301 avg, .768 OPS) with 175 runs scored, 21 homers, 120 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. Gennett is blocked right now by Rickie Weeks at the major league level at 2B, but that doesn’t change the fact that he has a high upside.

Shaun Marcum has been a rock in the Milwaukee Brewers’ rotation

30-year old righty starting pitcher Shaun Marcum continues to be a rock in the Brewers’ starting rotation. He has pitched in 5 games (all starts) for the Brewers in 2012 and he is 1-1 with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Marcum has now pitched in 38 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Brewers and he is 14-8 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. The Brewers traded 3B Brett Lawrie to the Blue Jays for Marcum, so he needs to keep up the good work. Lawrie is really playing well for the Jays this year.

The Milwaukee Brewers release Zach Braddock

The Brewers have released 24-year old lefty reliever Zach Braddock. Braddock pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He pitched in 71 games (0 starts) in his two years with the Brewers and he was 1-3 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. Some team will give Braddock another shot as he has an electric arm.
