Cecil Cooper was a wizard with the bat for the Milwaukee Brewers
Whenever anyone brings up Milwaukee Brewers history, Robin Yount and Paul Molitor come to mind. But, lefty swinging 1B Cecil Cooper was also a great hitter during that era of Brewers’ history. His best year with the Brewers without a doubt was 1980 when he was simply amazing. Cooper played in 153 games for the Brewers in 1980 and he was 219 for 622 (.352 avg, .926 OPS) with 96 runs scored, 25 homers, 122 RBIs (led the majors) and 17 stolen bases. Even more amazing than those numbers is the fact that Cooper only whiffed 42 times in 1980. Cooper was #5 in the MVP Voting in 1980. He also made the All-Star team, won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger Award in 1980. Cooper played in 1,490 games in his 11 years with the Brewers and he is 1,815 of 6,019 (.302 avg, .809 OPS) with 821 runs scored, 201 homers, 944 RBIs and 77 stolen bases. Cooper is #4 in games played (1,490) in Brewers’ history. He is also #3 in hits (1,815), #4 in batting average (.302), #3 in runs scored (821), #3 in doubles (345), #5 in triples (33), #5 in homers (201) and #2 in RBIs (944) in Brewers’ history. Cooper made it to 5 All-Star teams, won 2 Gold Glove Awards and he won 3 Silver Slugger Awards in his 11 years with the Brewers.
