The Brewers have re-signed 30-year old righty swinging infielder Edwin Maysonet to a minor league deal. Maysonet played in 103 games in AAA-ball for the Brewers last year and he was 111 of 383 (.290 avg, .733 OPS) with 57 runs scored, 3 homers, 39 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Maysonet has played in 46 games in his two years in the majors and he is 21 for 76 (.276 avg, .659 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer and 7 RBIs. Maysonet will get a shot in spring training to make the Brewers’ opening day roster in 2012.

28-year old switch-hitting outfielder Brandon Boggs has elected to become a free agent. Boggs played in 16 games for the Brewers last year and he was 3 for 19 (.158 avg, .746 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 homers, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has now played in 130 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 68 for 326 (.209 avg, .695 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 10 homers, 43 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Brewers won’t miss him too much.

The Milwaukee Brewers have 9 potential free agents heading into this winter

Blogged under General, Front Page, Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Monday 17 October 2011 at 5:03 pm

The Brewers are likely going to feel the winds of change over the winter as they have 9 players set to become free agents after the World Series is over. Here is a look at who I think will be staying and leaving:

Prince Fielder: 27-year old lefty swinging 1B Prince Fielder was the only core player not to get a long term deal from the Brewers. He has already implied that he is as good as gone this winter. Fielder played in 162 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 170 for 569 (.299 avg, .981 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 38 homers, 120 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Those are going to be hard numbers to replace. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Mark Kotsay: 35-year old lefty swinging OF/1B Mark Kotsay played in 104 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 63 for 233 (.270 avg, .703 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 3 homers, 31 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. I think the Brewers will want to bring him back in 2012. PREDICTION: STAYING

Jerry Hairston: 35-year old righty swinging infielder Jerry Hairston played in 45 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 34 for 124 (.274 avg, .727 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 1 homer, 17 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He played in 120 games overall last year with the Brewers & Nationals and he was 91 for 337 (.270 avg, .727 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 5 homers, 31 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Hairston was the Brewers’ starting 3B in the playoffs and he looked good. PREDICTION: STAYING

Felipe Lopez: 31-year old switch-hitting infielder Felipe Lopez played in 16 games for the Brewers this year and he was 8 for 44 (.182 avg, .427 OPS) with 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs. He played in 48 games overall in 2011 with the Rays & Brewers in which he was 29 for 141 (.206 avg, .523 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Craig Counsell: 41-year old lefty swinging infielder Craig Counsell played in 107 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he is 28 for 157 (.178 avg, .503 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 1 homer, 9 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He is toast as a player. PREDICTION: LIKELY RETIRING AND CERTAINLY LEAVING

Yuniesky Betancourt: 29-year old righty swinging shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt played in 152 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 140 for 556 (.252 avg, .652 OPS) with 51 runs scored, 13 homers, 68 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Brewers hold a $6 million dollar option on Betancourt for 2012 and a buyout for $2 million bucks. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Francisco Rodriguez: 29-year old righty reliever Francisco Rodriguez pitched in 31 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He pitched in 73 games (0 starts) for the Mets & Brewers last year and he was 6-2 with 23 saves, a 2.64 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He wants to go back to closing games and that won’t happen in Milwaukee. PREDICTION: LEAVING

LaTroy Hawkins: 38-year old righty reliever LaTroy Hawkins pitched in 52 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Takashi Saito: 41-year old righty reliever Takashi Saito pitched in 30 games (0 starts) for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 4-2 with a 2.03 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. PREDICTION: LEAVING

The Milwaukee Brewers had a solid 2011 season

Blogged under General, Season Reviews, Front Page, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Monday 17 October 2011 at 4:49 pm

The Milwaukee Brewers won the N.L. Central Division in 2011 with a 96-66 record, which had them 6 games ahead of the second place St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers then beat the Diamondbacks in five games in the N.L.D.S. before falling to the Cardinals in six games in the N.L.C.S. Here is what really stood out to me in 2011 about the Brewers:

TEAM MVP: This is a tie between 27-year old righty swinging LF Ryan Braun and 27-year old lefty swinging 1B Prince Fielder. Braun played in 150 games for the Brewers last year and he was 187 of 563 (.332 avg, .994 OPS) with 109 runs scored, 33 homers, 111 RBIs and 33 stolen bases. Fielder played in all 162 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 170 for 569 (.299 avg, .981 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 38 homers, 120 RBIs, 1 stolen base and 107 walks.

BEST PITCHER: 28-year old righty closer John Axford was awesome in 2011 for the Brewers. He pitched in 74 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 2-2 with 46 saves, a 1.95 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He only gave up 59 hits while whiffing 86 batters in only 73 2/3 innings for the Brewers in 2011, and that’s pretty darn impressive.

PLEASANT SURPRISE: 31-year old lefty swinging Nyjer Morgan stepped up in CF in 2011 when Carlos Gomez faded in the first half of the year. Morgan played in 119 games for the Brewers in 2011 and he was 115 for 378 (.304 avg, .778 OPS) with 61 runs scored, 4 homers, 37 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: 29-year old righty swinging 3B Casey McGehee was so bad in 2011, that he lost his starting job to Jerry Hairston in the playoffs. McGehee played in 155 games for the Brewers last year and he was 122 for 546 (.223 avg, .626 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 13 homers and 67 RBIs.

N.L.C.S. Game #6: St. Louis Cardinals 12, Milwaukee Brewers 6

The Cardinals jumped to a 9-4 lead after three innings, and the Brewers could not rebound from it. Shaun Marcum was lousy last night as he worked the first inning and he allowed 3 hits (1 homer), 4 runs (all earned), while walking 1 batter and whiffing 1. Marcum was the losing pitcher for the Brewers. Chris Narveson followed him into this game with a gas can. He worked the next 1 2/3 innings and he gave up 4 hits (2 homers), 5 runs (all earned) while whiffing 3 batters and walking only 1. LaTroy Hawkins worked the next 1 1/3 innings without giving up any runs. Kameron Loe gave up 2 hits and 2 unearned runs in only 1 inning for the Brewers. Takashi Saito tamed the Cardinals by working 2 shutout innings, allowing only 1 hit while whiffing 3 batters. Francisco Rodriguez was up next and he gave up 2 hits and 1 run (it was earned) in the 8th inning. John Axford pitched a scoreless 9th inning in which he gave up no runs and whiffed 2 batters. Jerry Hairston led the way with the bat last night as he was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Corey Hart (1 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI), Rickie Weeks (1 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI) and Jonathan Lucroy (1 for 3 with 1 run scored and 2 RBIs) pitched in with 1 homer apiece in this game. The Brewers’ season is now over as the Cardinals took them out 4-2 in this series.
