The Milwaukee Brewers will likely have a spring training battle for CF in 2011

24-year old righty swinging rookie Lorenzo Cain and 24-year old righty swinging Carlos Gomez will likely battle for the starting CF job next spring. Gomez had the job when this season started but he has not played that well. Gomez has played in 95 games for the Twins so far this year and he is 71 of 288 (.247 avg, .655 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 5 homers, 24 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. He still plays a good defensive CF but if he doesn’t hit better, Cain is going to take his job. Cain has played in 39 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 37 of 129 (.287 avg, .719 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 1 homer, 10 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Cain is one of the better prospects the Brewers have so he will have a good chance to supplant Gomez next spring.

Mat Gamel is done for the year for the Milwaukee Brewers

25-year old lefty swinging 3B Mat Gamel’s season is over as he needs surgery on his left big toe. Gamel played in 12 games for the Brewers this year and he was 3 of 15 (.200 avg, .561 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. He has now played in 75 games in his three years with the Brewers and he is 35 of 145 (.241 avg, .749 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 5 homers and 21 RBIs. This might be the winter that the Brewers seriously consider dealing Gamel. He is learning the outfield but his best positions are 3B and 1B. He is completely blocked in RF, LF, 1B and 3B right now as he isn’t going to beat out Corey Hart, Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder or Casey McGahee any time soon.

The Milwaukee Brewers ink Mark DiFelice

The Brewers have signed 34-year old righty reliever Mark DiFelice to a minor league deal. DiFelice pitched in 59 games (0 starts) for the Brewers last year and he was 4-1 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He has now pitched in 74 games (0 starts) in his 2 years with the Brewers and he is 5-1 with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. DiFelice was signed for next year as he was injured this year. I like this signing for the Brewers.

This is the year the Milwaukee Brewers knew Rickie Weeks had in him

Blogged under General, Front Page, Playing Well, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 September 2010 at 10:09 am

The Brewers kept standing by 28-year old righty swinging 2B Rickie Weeks through a lot of injury ravaged seasons because of his “potential”. Well this year Weeks has stayed healthy and converted potential into reality for the Brewers, rewarding the team for the faith they showed in him over the years. Weeks has played in 148 games for the Brewers so far this year and he is 162 of 607 (.267 avg, .825 OPS) with 101 runs scored, 27 homers, 79 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. His only weakness is that he whiffs far to often (173 times so far this year). Weeks has set new career highs already in games played (148), runs scored (101), ABs (607), doubles (31), homers (27), RBIs (79) and whiffs (173). It will be interesting to see if this season was a “career year” or a preview of things to come from Rickie Weeks.

The Milwaukee Brewers shut down Doug Davis

Blogged under General, Front Page, Pitching BP, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Friday 17 September 2010 at 11:30 pm

The Brewers have shut down 34-year old lefty starting pitcher Doug Davis for the rest of the year due to elbow problems. Plus, the Brewers wanted to look at younger pitchers the last couple of weeks. Davis started 8 games for the Brewers this year and he was 1-4 with a 7.51 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP. He has pitched in 119 games (all starts) in his five years with the Brewers and he is 38-40 with a 4.11 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. I see no way that the Brewers pick up Davis’ option for 2011 so he might have already pitched his last game ever for the team.
