The Milwaukee Brewers have had infielder Callix Crabbe returned to them by the Padres who attempted to send him down after picking him up in the Rule 5 Draft over the winter. Crabbe played in 21 games for the Padres this season and he was 6 for 34 (.176 avg, .488 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. This will help the Brewers depth in their farm system as Crabbe has some skills.

23-year old righty swinging outfielder Matt LaPorta is on the fast track to the major leagues with the Brewers. He has converted from 1B to the outfield and that will get him to the big leagues much quicker. He is the #1 prospect in the entire minor league system of the Brewers according to Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook. LaPorta has played in 31 games in AA-ball this season and he is 38 for 111 (.342 avg, 1.157 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 10 homers and 36 RBIs. Another impressive thing about LaPorta is that he has only whiffed 19 times this season which is solid for a power hitter. He will be on the Brewers before September, book it!

The Brewers might have to consider pulling Eric Gagne from the closer’s job if he doesn’t pick it up soon. He has already blown 5 saves this season and many closers don’t do that in a entire season let alone one month. Gagne has pitched in 16 games for the Brewers so far this season and he is 1-1 with 9 saves, a 6.14 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. The other big addition to the bullpen over the winter was David Riske but he can’t be counted on to replace Gagne. Like most Indians and Royals fans know…..Riske looks like a deer in headlights when the game is on the line. Riske has pitched in 14 games this season and he is 0-1 with 1 save, a 5.51 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. That leaves either Salomon Torres or Guillermo Mota as the possible replacements for Gagne as the Brewers’ closer. Torres tried that job for the Pirates last season and he couldn’t keep the job. Torres has pitched in 15 games for the Brewers this season and he is 3-0 with 1 save, a 2.95 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Guillermo Mota also had a chance to close a couple of seasons ago for the Marlins but he failed miserably. Mota has pitched in 13 games for the Brewers this season and he is 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.

This is a very fair question as he has never lived up to the hype surrounding him. Sure it seems that he has the skills to succeed but he has never put them all together yet. Weeks has played in 29 games so far this season for the Brewers and he is 22 for 113 (.195 avg, .662 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 3 homers, 8 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Despite scoring all of the runs that he has this season the Brewers might start to think about dropping him in the lineup and putting someone at the top of the batting order that can get on base more consistently.

The Brewers couldn’t take any more from Derrick Turnbow as he was running his mouth while pitching horribly. Turnbow pitched in 8 games this season for the Brewers and he was 0-1 with 1 save, a 15.63 ERA and a 3.95 WHIP. Turnbow allowed 12 hits and walked 13 batters in only 6.1 innings pitched so far this year. The Brewers won’t miss Turnbow at all with the way he was pitching.
